1. Build Safety - People need to feel that they can actually talk about the issues that they experience. 

2. Vulnerability - Leaders need to show vulnerability to their team.

3. Focused Purpose - If the team aren't clear on where they're going, then they're not gonna get there.

Our key focus for 2019 is get the right culture. So here's a good model. So we talk about use of models and how they can help drive great performance. Here's a model that's proven.

Safety

So first thing is, you've got to build safety. Safety in this context, is yes of course the physical safety of working on a site or working in an operation, but this is also about emotional safety. People need to feel that they can actually talk about the issues that they experience. That they can approach their leader, approach team members in an open and honest way, and say what they're really thinking without feeling judged and shut down. So build safety, good dialogue based on the safety concept.

Vulnerability

Next thing is share. Vulnerability is so important. Leaders need not to be seen as being the fond of all knowledge or having answers for everything that's out there. In fact, it's actually detrimental to the success of the team if you're forever problem-solving for them. You coach and develop them to problem-solve, you provide the additional support, and help them run the roadblocks that are outside their care accountabilities.

So when you don't know, say you don't know. If you're not sure, say you're not sure. But then work with the team to come up with ways to actually address those gaps. If you're actually prepared to be vulnerable, they will too, and then you'll really understand what's happening in your team and with individuals on your team, which will give you great opportunities to come in behind that and coach them to success.

Focused Purpose

The third thing, a focused purpose. If the team aren't clear on where they're going, then they're not gonna get there. So prepare them, help them have a clarity around their purpose, understand their contribution to that purpose. That will empower them to get out there and do the work and you'll just be guiding them. Think if it like the reigns on a horse. Once the horse knows where it's going, it's just a matter of keeping it on track. And these are the components, those three parts of that tripod, if you like, of what contribute to developing world class teams.

So go out there and nail it. Get culture right for two 2019.
